How homeowners find a contractor through AI in 2026
The phone still has to ring. What changed is the step before it. 45% of US consumers have used AI tools to find a local business, up from 6% a year earlier; ChatGPT (31%) and Google AI Mode (23%) are the most used (BrightLocal, 2026). The path looks like this:
- Ask: “Who should I call for a roof leak in Dallas?” or “AC broke, who can come today?”
- Shortlist: ChatGPT names about four businesses per answer (BrightLocal, Sep 2026), usually as cards with a star rating.
- Check: 97% of AI users sometimes compare the recommendation with real reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- Call. Soon, maybe not the homeowner: Google has announced that AI Mode will call businesses such as home-repair services on a user’s behalf in the US (Google, May 2026; an announcement, launch not yet verified by us).
A strong map-pack position helps but doesn’t carry over automatically: tracked businesses showed up in 66% of Google Maps results but in only 33% of ChatGPT answers (BrightLocal, Sep 2026).
Where AI gets its answers about trades: directories first
For trades, AI reads directories more than contractor websites. The UK data is the clearest:
Source: Murray Digital, Aug 2026. Directories made up 71.9% of the 405 sources cited. Small sample.
In the US the directory layer looks different. Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings and business data to OpenAI in July 2026 (MediaPost, 2026), and in our checks close to half of ChatGPT’s US business cards (159 of 341) carried Yelp’s logo and Yelp’s numbers. One Phoenix HVAC company with about 9,800 Google reviews appeared on ChatGPT’s card with 360, its Yelp count. Across all local businesses, Yelp accounts for 9.5% of AI citations and Google Business Profiles for 28.6% (BrightLocal, Sep 2026).
You may dislike Yelp, Angi or Checkatrade as lead sellers. Their free profiles are still what AI reads, so keep them complete and correct whether or not you buy leads.
What we measured, trade by trade
On 3 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT (3–5 runs), Gemini and Google AI Mode the questions homeowners ask, in five trade-and-city combinations. Small samples, one day; the full breakdowns are on each trade page.
| Trade, city | What the engines did | Sources AI used |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbing, Denver | ChatGPT and Gemini named no plumber in common; AI Mode named a third set | Yelp, Thumbtack, Angi, Expertise.com, Birdeye in the results of every ChatGPT run |
| Roofing, Dallas | No roofer in all five ChatGPT runs; AI Mode’s four names weren’t on ChatGPT’s list | GAF contractor locator, Angi, BBB (Dallas and Denver); Google’s AI Overview built from Google profiles |
| HVAC, Phoenix | “24/7” in all five ChatGPT answers; AI Mode named two companies, neither on ChatGPT’s list | HomeAdvisor, Expertise.com, company websites |
| Roofing, Manchester (UK) | ChatGPT searched Checkatrade, TrustATrader and Which? Trusted Traders in every run | TrustATrader cited in 5 answers, Checkatrade in 3 |
| Plumbing, Manchester (UK) | ChatGPT quoted a “£122–£240” price range from Checkatrade in 4 of 5 answers | Checkatrade cited in 6 answers; Yell searched |
In most combinations ChatGPT added a trust word to its own searches: “licensed”, “BBB”, a manufacturer certification, or the name of a UK directory. When we asked whether a Manchester roofer was “legit”, all three engines looked the company up in Companies House on their own.
Businesses without a storefront start slightly behind: service-area businesses appeared in 29.4% of AI answers against 33.6% for storefronts (BrightLocal, Sep 2026). Most trades are service-area businesses, so define your service area the same way on your Google profile, directories and site, and back it with reviews and job photos that name real towns. Never invent an address to look local.
When AI calls you: hours, emergency service and the phone
If an AI assistant is going to call or send people to you, your hours and phone number must be right everywhere. Our checks found the kind of errors that cost jobs (3 Oct 2026, businesses anonymized):
- A Phoenix HVAC company open 24/7 on its site and Google profile was listed by Google AI Mode as open “5:00 AM to midnight”, taken from old directory data.
- For a Manchester plumber, ChatGPT took the phone number from a different company’s lookalike website.
- For a Manchester roofer, AI Mode quoted prices in US dollars.
The checklist: true hours including holidays and after-hours, an emergency line that is answered, one main number on every profile (tracking numbers kept off your core listings), and a service area that matches where you dispatch.
Pick your trade
- Roofing SEOHigh-ticket, high-scrutiny jobs. Homeowners and AI both check proof of work, certifications and who will still be around after the storm.
- HVAC SEOUrgent and seasonal. “Who can come today?” answers are only as good as your hours, emergency service and service area, and AI gets those wrong.
- Plumber SEOIn Denver, ChatGPT and Gemini named completely different plumbers for the same question, and every ChatGPT search included the word “licensed”.
Other service-area businesses with their own trust problems: SEO for moving companies.
Cross-trade comparison
| Trade | What drives the search | What AI checks | Directories to keep right |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roofing | Replacement, storm and hail damage, cost | Licence and insurance, manufacturer certification, BBB | US: Angi, BBB, Yelp, GAF and other locators · UK: TrustATrader, Checkatrade, Which? |
| HVAC | Breakdowns, “today”, “open now”, season | Hours, 24/7 service, service area | US: HomeAdvisor, Angi, Yelp · UK: Checkatrade, Gas Safe register |
| Plumbing | Emergencies, leaks, water heaters | “Licensed”, reviews, after-hours | US: Yelp, Thumbtack, Angi, Expertise.com · UK: Checkatrade, Yell |
Home service marketing basics, in AI order
1. Google Business Profile
The shared feed for the map pack, Gemini, Google AI Mode and, in Europe, ChatGPT’s cards. Correct categories, every service you do, service area, true hours, real photos of crews and vans, replies to reviews.
2. Directory profiles
The ones AI reads in your country and trade (table above): complete, same name, same phone, same licence number.
3. Reviews that mention the job and the town
Ask after every job. No incentives, no filtering out unhappy customers, no fake reviews. Regulators in both the US and the UK have rules against fake and incentivized reviews.
4. Service and service-area pages with substance
One page per job type, with price ranges from your own invoices and photos of real work. Area pages only where you have done jobs; near-identical town pages are doorway pages.
5. Ads and Local Services Ads are rented visibility
They work while you pay. Your profiles, pages and reviews keep working after you stop. Brand mentions in local news and community sites correlate with AI visibility more than backlinks do (Ahrefs, Dec 2025; correlation, not proof).
How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, and why it names a competitor
There is no known way to pay for a place inside ChatGPT’s answer or to register your company with it. It names contractors whose facts it finds in several places that agree. When a competitor is named and you aren’t, it’s usually because their directory profiles are complete, their reviews are on the platforms AI reads, and their trust signals (licence, certification, registration) show up when ChatGPT searches for them. When AI gives wrong hours or a wrong number, find the listing it repeats and fix it there. Google’s own guidance is that optimizing for AI search is still SEO (Google Search Central, 2026): no special files or code.

FAQ
Does ChatGPT recommend local contractors?
Yes. It typically names about four businesses per answer, often as cards with a rating. For trades its sources lean heavily on directories: in a UK study, Checkatrade appeared in 78 of 80 answers. Being complete and consistent on the directories that matter in your country counts as much as your website.
Does ChatGPT use Google Maps data or Yelp?
Both, depending on the country. In our UK and EU checks, ChatGPT’s business cards matched the Google profile exactly. In the US, close to half of the cards showed Yelp’s rating and review count, which can be far lower than Google’s. Gemini and Google AI Mode build their answers from Google Maps.
How do I get customers from AI search as a home-service business?
Fix the sources AI reads: a complete Google profile with correct hours, emergency service and service area; full listings on the directories that matter in your country; reviews that mention the job and the town; and service pages with real price ranges and photos. Then measure repeated AI answers, not one screenshot.
Is local AI search optimization different from local SEO?
It builds on local SEO. The additions are measuring what ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode say, prioritising the directories they cite, and keeping facts like hours, emergency service and licences identical everywhere, because AI repeats inconsistencies.
Should I keep paying for Angi, Thumbtack or Checkatrade?
That’s a lead-cost decision, but treat the free profile separately from the paid leads. AI reads those directories, so the profile should be complete and accurate whether or not you buy leads. We don’t sell directory advertising.
Is this an AI receptionist or answering service?
No. We don’t answer your phones. We make sure AI assistants name your business and get your facts right, so the calls that reach you are for jobs you do, in areas you serve.
