Does ranking in Google Maps get you recommended by AI?
Not automatically. A strong Maps position helps, but each AI engine builds its own list, and the lists overlap far less than most owners expect.
On 3 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the same local questions, 29 industry-and-city combinations in 10 countries, and compared them with Google’s map results (our check; small samples, one day):
- Gemini follows Google Maps closely. In the UK and EU round, 29 of the 37 businesses shown in Google’s local map results appeared in Gemini’s answers. Gemini linked to Google Maps in 60 of 87 answers across all rounds.
- ChatGPT follows it much less. In the same round, only 19 of those 37 map-pack businesses appeared in ChatGPT’s five runs.
- The engines disagree with each other. The overlap between ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s lists was 0.17–0.22 (Jaccard similarity) across our rounds. For one Denver plumbing question, the two engines named no plumber in common, and AI Mode named a third set.
Question:“Can you recommend a good plumber in Denver?”

BrightLocal saw the same at scale: across platforms, AI answers to the same local question overlap only 19–29% (Sep 2026). So “we rank #2 in Maps” and “ChatGPT recommends us” are separate facts that need separate checks.

Where local AI answers get their data
Mostly from your Google profile, review sites and directories, and less from your website than you might think.
| Source | Share of local AI citations |
|---|---|
| Business websites | 42% |
| Google Business Profiles | 28.63% |
| Yelp | 9.53% |
| 2.23% | |
| Tripadvisor | 1.79% |

Our own checks show how each engine uses those sources:
- ChatGPT shows business cards with a rating and review count. In seven European countries, 0 of 307 cards carried another provider’s logo, and every card we checked matched the Google profile exactly. In the US, 159 of 341 cards carried Yelp’s logo and showed Yelp’s numbers, Yelp announced a licence of its data to OpenAI on 23 July 2026 (MediaPost).
- Gemini answers local questions out of Google Maps, linking to Maps places in most answers.
- Google AI Mode builds answers from place cards (name, rating, review count) plus business websites and booking pages.
The practical result: your Google profile is the shared feed for all three, and in the US your Yelp page is the second one. A duplicate profile, wrong hours or an old phone number reaches every engine at once.
Which directories matter in your industry
Each industry and country has its own set. These are the ones AI engines cited or searched in our checks:
| Industry | Seen in AI answers |
|---|---|
| Dentists (US) | ADA Find-a-Dentist, Zocdoc, Healthgrades, Birdeye, WebMD; Yelp |
| Dentists (Europe) | Doctolib, Jameda, Doctify, Doctoralia, MioDottore, ZnanyLekarz; CQC register (UK) |
| Trades (US) | Angi, HomeAdvisor, BBB, Expertise.com, GAF contractor directory (roofers) |
| Trades (UK) | Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Yell, MyJobQuote, Which? Trusted Traders |
| Law firms (US) | Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers, bar associations |
| Med spas (US) | RealSelf, booking pages (Vagaro, Boulevard, Zenoti) |
| Movers (US) | FMCSA register, moveBuddha, ConsumerAffairs |
Two outside studies point the same way. In UK trades, Checkatrade appeared in 78 of 80 ChatGPT answers (Murray Digital, Aug 2026; small sample). For real-estate agents, 98.1% of the sources ChatGPT cited were the agent’s own site or Google profile (OmniEclipse, Aug 2026; vendor, small sample). Details per industry: industries.
Why AI Overviews isn’t the surface to watch for local searches
Because it rarely appears. On 29 “category + city” searches in 10 countries, Google showed an AI Overview only 3 times and showed its map results instead. For “who should I call” questions, the AI surfaces to watch are Google AI Mode, which passed one billion monthly users (Google, May 2026), Gemini, ChatGPT and the map pack itself. Google has also announced that AI Mode will call businesses such as home repair, beauty and pet care on a user’s behalf in the US; we haven’t verified the rollout yet.
Storefront vs service-area businesses
Businesses customers visit tend to be named slightly more often than businesses that travel to customers: 33.6% versus 29.4% in BrightLocal’s data (Sep 2026). The engines also reach differently: 90% of the businesses ChatGPT recommended were within 287 km of the searcher, against 64 km for AI Mode and 38 km for AI Overviews.
For roofers, plumbers, cleaners and movers this means two things. Define your service area precisely on your Google profile and website, the towns, not just “and surrounding areas”. And publish one clear page per service and main area, so an engine with a wide radius still has a local reason to name you.

Local SEO audit: what we check first
Before any work, we run the same nine checks for every business: AI crawler access, whether your pages read without JavaScript, business markup, name/address/phone consistency, your Google profile, the directories AI cites in your country, service and price pages, languages, and the AI answers themselves, including questions about your business by name. That last part often finds the most: in 12 of 21 businesses we checked in detail, the business’s own website, Google profile or booking system contradicted each other, and engines repeated whichever version they found.

How we measure: Maps rank and AI mentions, separately
We record Google’s map results as the baseline and ask each AI engine the same fixed questions several times: ChatGPT five times, Gemini three, Google AI Mode once or twice. Results are fractions with a date, “named in 3 of 5 ChatGPT answers, 2 of 3 Gemini answers”, never a percentage from one run, and never a single “AI rank”. We measure before work starts and again at 60 and 90 days, with identical questions. Why repeated runs: asked the same question again, AI engines repeat only 20–33% of the businesses they named (BrightLocal, Sep 2026). Full protocol: methodology.

FAQ
Does ChatGPT use Google Maps?
We can’t see OpenAI’s sources directly. In the UK and EU, the ratings and review counts on ChatGPT’s business cards matched the Google profile exactly in every case we checked. In the US, about half the cards showed Yelp’s numbers instead. Treat your Google profile, and in the US your Yelp page, as ChatGPT’s data.
Does my Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews?
For “category + city” searches we saw an AI Overview on only 3 of 29 searches; Google showed its map results instead. Gemini and Google AI Mode, however, build local answers from Google’s place data, so your profile matters a great deal there.
What is local AI search optimization (local GEO)?
Making sure AI assistants name your business for local questions and describe it correctly: a complete Google profile, consistent listings on the directories AI searches, service and price pages it can read, and a steady flow of reviews, measured across repeated AI answers.
How does ChatGPT recommend local businesses?
In our checks it searched for reviews (“plumber Denver reviews 2026”), read rating sites and directories, and showed business cards with Google- or Yelp-matching ratings. It names about four businesses per answer (BrightLocal, Sep 2026), and the list changes between runs.
Is local SEO different from organic SEO?
Organic SEO ranks your web pages. Local SEO ranks your business in Google Maps and local results through your profile, reviews and listings. AI assistants lean heavily on the local side, which is why local SEO matters more, not less, for AI answers.
